When we think about what students should get out of a course, the first thing that usually comes to mind is content. What should they know? What concepts should they understand? What information should they remember?
Those questions matter, but there is another question we should be asking:
- What will students do with what they have learned?
That question gets to the heart of meaningful learning.
Education should not simply be about giving students knowledge and hoping they figure out how to use it later. Students need opportunities to practice applying what they are learning while they are learning it. They need opportunities to solve problems, make decisions, communicate ideas, create something, and learn from mistakes.
That is where career skill building comes in.
Every Course Is Building More Than Content Knowledge
Career preparation is sometimes viewed as something reserved for professional programs. But career skill building does not belong to only those disciplines.
Every course has opportunities to develop skills students can carry with them into their careers.
A psychology course can build analysis, communication, and ethical decision-making. A biology course can develop research, problem-solving, data analysis, and scientific communication. A history course can strengthen critical thinking, writing, and evidence-based reasoning. A mathematics course can develop quantitative reasoning and decision-making.
The content changes, but the transferable skills are everywhere.
The question is: Are we intentionally giving students opportunities to practice those skills?
Knowing Is Not the Same as Doing
A student can successfully memorize a concept and still struggle to apply it in a real situation.
They may be able to define a theory on an exam but have difficulty recognizing when that theory applies to a real-world problem. They may know a formula but struggle to determine which approach to use when faced with an unfamiliar situation.
This is why application matters.
Application takes learning out of the abstract and gives it somewhere to go.
Instead of simply asking students to recall information, we can ask them to use it. Instead of asking them to repeat what they read, we can ask them to analyze a situation, make a recommendation, solve a problem, create something, or explain their thinking.
The content has not necessarily changed.
The learning experience has.
What If We Changed the Question?
One simple way to build career skills into our courses is to change the question we ask when designing learning activities.
Instead of asking, What do students need to know?
Ask, What should students be able to do with this knowledge?
That small shift can change an entire learning experience.
A student learning about environmental policy might analyze a real environmental issue and develop a recommendation.
A psychology student might analyze a case and communicate their findings.
A business student might use data to make a recommendation to a hypothetical organization.
An education student might design a lesson and explain the choices behind it.
Students are still learning the content. They are simply being given an opportunity to do something with it.
We Don't Have to Add More. We Need to Design Differently.
Career skill building does not mean adding more assignments or turning every course into a complicated simulation.
Sometimes it means taking an activity that already exists and making it more authentic.
A quiz question can become a scenario that requires students to make a decision.
A discussion can ask students to take on a professional perspective and defend a recommendation.
A writing assignment can move from summarizing information to communicating a solution to a specific audience.
We do not necessarily need more learning activities.
We need learning activities that give students opportunities to apply what they are learning.
Give Students Somewhere to Practice
The workplace rarely looks like a multiple-choice test.
Professionals are given incomplete information, unfamiliar problems, competing priorities, and situations that do not have one obvious answer. They have to make decisions, communicate with others, adjust when something does not work, and learn from mistakes.
Students need opportunities to practice those skills before they are expected to use them professionally.
When we give students a safe place to try, receive feedback, revise, and try again, we are doing more than teaching content.
We are helping them build confidence in their ability to use what they know.
Learning That Goes Somewhere
As educators and learning designers, we have an opportunity to make the connection between learning and the world beyond the classroom more visible.
We can continue asking, What do students need to know?
But perhaps we should also ask:
- Where will they use this?
- What will they need to do with it?
- What skills are they developing along the way?
And most importantly:
- Have we given them a chance to practice?
Students are not learning only for the next quiz, paper, or grade. They are preparing for everything that comes after the course.
Our role is not simply to help students know more.
It is to help them become more capable of using what they know.
Because when we build application into learning, we give students something more valuable than knowledge alone.
We give their learning somewhere to go.
